Aloha Friends !
On a regular basis, I listen to music and often times it's the disc "Inside Job" by Don Henley. Don has been a favorite musician of mine for decades, starting back when he was with the Eagles. Like one of my other favorites , Dan Fogelberg, Don Henley has a way with words, often times telling us "how the cow ate the cabbage" so to speak. Personally, I like that about his music.
A very old friend...probably one of my best old friends, did a search and contacted me yesterday, after 35...maybe 45 years. Needless to say, it was great hearing from such a good friend and it took me back to some fun and maybe some reckless old memories the two of us had...nothing serious, just harmless fun. Maybe it was this potential revival of an old friendship that got me thinking about Don Henley's track "My Thanksgiving", even though the lyrics only vaguely relate...or maybe not even relate at all to me and my old friend...still, it's worth pondering what Don has to say. I hope you take the time to see if it applies to you, as it's rather long. I even left a couple of verses out, in the interest of time. Here is the condensed version:
"A lot of things have happened since the last time we spoke
Some of them are funny
Some of 'em ain't no joke
And I trust you will forgive me
if I lay it on the line
I always thought you were a friend of mine
Sometimes I think about you
I wonder how you're doing now
And what you're going through
The last time I saw you
We were playing with fire
We were loaded with passion
And a burning desire
For every breath, for every day of living
And this is my Thanksgiving
Now the trouble with you and me, my friend
Is the trouble with this nation
Too many blessings, too little appreciation
And I know that kind of notion - well, it just ain't cool
So send me back to Sunday school
Because I'm tired of waiting for Reason to arrive
It's too long we've been living these unexamined lives
I've got great expectations
I've got family and friends
I've got satisfying work
I've got a back that bends
For every breath, for every day of living
This is my thanksgiving
For every moment of joy
Every hour of fear
For every winding road that brought me here
For every breath, for every day of living
This is my Thanksgiving
For everyone who helped me start
And for everything that broke my heart
For every breath, for every day of living
This is my Thanksgiving (thanks to Don Henley!)
Please don't make the mistake that I made...keep in touch with your good old friends. We have too few of them in life.
Don
